FA Charges Liverpool Captain Virgil van Dijk for Red Card Infraction in Match against Newcastle

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has been charged with inappropriate behavior after a red card against Newcastle on Sunday.

A Netherlands player was sent off for a foul on Alexander Isak in the first half of Liverpool’s 2-1 win at St James’ Park, but the centre-back initially refused to leave the field before protesting to referee John Brooks.

This earned him an automatic one-match ban against Aston Villa this weekend, but the ban could be extended, which could see him also miss out on a trip to Wolverhampton.

“Virgil van Dijk has been charged with violating FA Rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League match against Newcastle United on Sunday 27 August,” the Football Association said in a statement.

“It is alleged that the defender acted inappropriately and/or used abusive and/or abusive language against a match official.”

Van Dijk has until Friday to respond to the allegations.
