Seeking a continuation of its recent purple spot and disappointment on the road, the Montreal will head to struggling New York early Thursday morning.
Starting with the hosts watching their League Cup adventure come to an abrupt end after a 1-0 loss to bitter local rivals the New York Red Bulls on August 4, New York FC has been in the midst of a public struggle. Continuing to show a number of issues on both sides of the month-long interval, Nick Cushing’s men were last seen over the weekend, showing yet another disturbing picture. After all, having dropped to 3-0 against Cincinnati, the Blues are battling at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and are in for a major uphill battle. In Thursday’s opening game, six points short of the playoffs, New York City have lost five of their last six games across all formats. Before the League Cup break, with a 2-1 away loss to Philadelphia, Cushing’s struggling team also gained a reputation for persistent problems in the final third. It should be noted that the hosts in the middle of the week did not score in any of the previous three defeats in a row.
On the away side, while Montreal may not have had much success during their League Cup adventure last month, Hernan Lozada’s side are enjoying great success in MLS. With another big game over the weekend when they pulled off a 1-0 home win over New England, the Impact will certainly feel the chance to set up another defeat here. After marking their comeback after a month-long hiatus with a spectacular 3-2 away win over Toronto, the visitors won each of their last three MLS games midweek. Heading into the break with a spectacular 2-0 victory over Charlotte on July 16, it looks like the mood in the Montreal camp continues to be high. After finding a recent clinical lead in the last third and scoring six goals in their three-match winning streak, Losada’s side are also in pole position to qualify for a playoff spot in 2023. In the top seven, we maintain a double chance away early Thursday morning.
