Switzerland and Spain won on Monday in what many pundits and fans have called the best night in international football history. On Friday, the two teams will meet in St. Petersburg, Russia, in the first of four quarter-final matches.

Monday’s madness began with Spain’s thrilling 5-3 win in extra time against Croatia. La Furia Roja started the match with a shocking own goal when Unai Simón missed Pedri’s back pass, but Spain recovered with three unanswered goals.

But Croatia were not a person to leave, recovering two goals in the last 10 minutes of the match, including a draw in the 92nd minute to force extra time. But Spain showed their stamina with goals from Álvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.

It did not seem possible to overcome Spain’s thriller in the round of 16, yet it happened in the next match with Switzerland that earned the shock of the Europeans with their victory on penalties against tournament favorite France.

After scoring the first goal, the Swiss suffered a four-goal momentum that featured a missed penalty that would have doubled his lead and three unanswered goals from France. But Switzerland reacted against all odds by two goals in the last nine minutes to force extra time, before goalkeeper Yann Sommer’s save from Kylian Mbappé’s penalty kick won the match.

But Switzerland will have to do without their captain Granit Xhaka, after his immense performance against France, due to the second yellow card of the tournament.

The two teams last met in a couple of UEFA Nations League matches in autumn 2020: Spain won the October match 1-0 while the two teams drew 1-1 in November. The winner of the quarter-finals will travel to London for a semi-final against Italy or Belgium.
