Soccer News: Son’s World Cup chances in doubt after Spurs suffer a broken eye

0

Son Heung Min’s chances of playing in the upcoming World Cup are in doubt after Tottenham revealed he suffered a fracture around his eye on Tuesday when he beat Marseille 2-1.

The striker was injured after a mid-air collision with Marseille defender Chancel Mbemba in the 23rd minute, which led to a long break in the game.

With visible pain and difficulty walking, Son was helped off the field by Spurs’ medical staff as his side secured a place in the Champions League play-offs with goals from Clement Lenglet and Pierre-Émile Hojbjerg.

The Spurs announced on Wednesday that Son had suffered a left eye injury and would need surgery.

In a statement on the club’s official website, the Spurs stated, “We can confirm that Son Heung Min will undergo surgery to stabilize a fracture around his left eye.

“After the operation, Son will begin rehabilitation with our medical staff and we will update supporters in due course.”

The announcement casts doubt on Son’s World Cup feasibility as South Korea is due to start their tournament against Uruguay in just 22 days.

Son’s injury is also a big blow for Spurs as strikers Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison remain out of preparation for Sunday’s Premier League game against Liverpool.
