Xavi happy with Marcos Alonso’s new Barcelona contract

Xavi backed Marcos Alonso who will play a big role in Barcelona’s quest for new trophies after he signed a new contract on Friday.

Alonso arrived at the Camp Nou in September as a free agent after leaving Chelsea, signing a contract until the end of this season.

The left-back extended his stay at the top of La Liga by another 12 months, with his buyout clause remaining at €50m.

Alonso made 19 appearances in his first season for the Blaugrana, scoring twice to mark his Spanish Super Cup triumph this month after beating tough rivals Real Madrid.

Barça head coach Xavi has welcomed the 32-year-old’s decision to sign a new contract.

He said: “I am really happy with Marcos. First, as a person and as a professional in the dressing room, where he has adapted very well.

“But also as a player. He is solid, mature and experienced. It was signed at the highest level and will be very important for us in the future.”

Teenager Ángel Alarcón has also signed a new deal with the Catalan giants that will keep him at the club until 2025 with a mammoth €400m clause.
