German Bastian Schweinsteiger, a former Bayern Munich player, spoke about his colleague and friend, Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, who is a strong candidate to take over as Liverpool coach next season.
Schweinsteiger spoke about the future of Alonso, who is performing brilliantly with his current team Bayer Leverkusen, who are top of the German league ahead of Bayern Munich.
In statements published by newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the German footballer said: “I think Xavi’s big dream is to coach a team in red shirts.”
He continued: “I can imagine it will be this summer when he eventually leaves for the Reds.”
Xabi Alonso is excited to become Liverpool manager
Bastian’s remarks come just days before Leverkusen’s crucial match against Bayern Munich at the top of the German league, which will largely determine the fate of this season’s Bundesliga champions.
Xavi had already hinted at his enthusiasm for coaching Liverpool in an interview following his official retirement from football.
Alonso played for the Reds between 2004 and 2009, during which time he managed to win several championships, most notably the 2005 European Champions League.
