World Cup 2030. Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay launch joint file

Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay filed a joint bid on Tuesday to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup to celebrate the centenary of hosting the first World Cup in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo.

“We are convinced that FIFA is committed to honoring the memory of those who organized the first FIFA World Cup,” said Paraguayan Alejandro Dominguez, President of the South American Football Confederation CONMEBOL.

Dominguez attended the joint candidacy ceremony, which took place at the Argentine Football Federation’s headquarters in Esis, south of the capital, Buenos Aires, knowing the candidacy competition was raging before FIFA chose a host in 2024.

The four countries nominated to host raised the slogan “2030 together – 100 years”, noting that the four federations had previously announced their intention to participate in early August.

The main challenge to the countries of the South American continent comes from the joint file of Spain, Portugal and Ukraine, which enjoys the support of the game of the European Union.

Adding to this, there is talk of Saudi Arabia’s aspirations to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup since last September Mohamed Fawzi, an official from the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports, announced that his country was exploring with Saudi Arabia and Greece the possibility of launching in a joint file.

And Saudi Sports Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal confirmed to Agence France Presse last Wednesday that his country had not filed a dossier for the candidacy, stressing that “anything is possible.”

The Uruguay national team was crowned at home in Montevideo with the title of the inaugural World Cup by beating their Argentine counterpart 4–2 in the 1930 World Cup which featured 13 teams.

Argentina won the last World Cup hosted by Qatar, defeating France on penalties in the final.

The United States, Mexico and Canada will host the next World Cup in 2026 and for the first time will feature 48 teams, up from 32 previously.
