Van Dijk driven by World Cup regret as Liverpool refuse to give up on title in ´crazy´ season

Virgil van Dijk has not given up on Liverpool’s Premier League hopes despite being 15 points behind Arsenal.

The Reds came from behind to beat Leicester City 2-1 at Anfield on Friday thanks to two own goals from Wut Faes to give Jurgen Klopp’s team four league wins.

Van Dijk has previously acknowledged that Liverpool’s performance against the Foxes was disappointing, but the results were surprisingly better for the team, which had just two wins – and three losses – in seven top-flight matches in November.

Liverpool are four points behind great rivals Manchester United in fourth place and yet Van Dijk is still undefeated in the Premier League title race even though Arsenal are starting to build up a significant lead over everyone.

For Van Dijk, that faith and motivation comes in part from his experience at the World Cup, where the Netherlands were eliminated by eventual winners Argentina in a cheeky quarter-final.

He remains hopeful that international success is just around the corner and that mentality seems to haunt him with Liverpool as well.

“In the end everything was disappointing [for the Netherlands]it is also part of football,” he told reporters.

“It was a tough couple of days, but then you had to get back to the most important things in life; my wife and kids.

“It fuels me because I want to be successful in the Netherlands. I feel like we have a fantastic squad and a new era with the return of Ronald Koeman and the arrival of young players like Cody. [Gakpo] For example. He can make big moves with his transfer [to Liverpool] and then become more important [for the Netherlands].

“Hopefully we can do something good in the Nations League final this summer, that’s what I really want to win even though it’s the end of the season when you’re absolutely beaten.

“It also motivated me here. We are a few points behind Arsenal, but the season can be very crazy, very strange.

“But we have to be realistic and at the moment we are not thinking about the title. We have to focus on the upcoming game, win matches and then we’ll see.”

Liverpool will take on Brentford on Monday.
