Barcelona have been charged with administrative corruption in connection with the provision of 7 million euros to the deputy of the technical committee of referees, Henriques Negrera, and the case will be heard in June.
And the Spanish newspaper said that if Barça had been found guilty, it would have violated article 50 of the UEFA regulations, which prohibits any club from engaging in any activity that affects the outcome of its national or continental matches.
The regulation also provides for a penalty of one season’s exclusion from European competition, which could have dire consequences for Barcelona, who are waiting for Champions League honors to improve their economic situation.
Notably, the Catalan club tops the La Liga table with 68 points, 12 points ahead of runners-up Real Madrid.
