UEFA Europa League News: Rangers 1-0 Alashkert: Morelos secures the advantage of the first leg after Lundstram’s red

Alfredo Morelos scored the only goal of the game when 10-man below average Rangers defeated Alashkert 1-0 in the first leg of the Europa League playoffs in Ibrox.

The Colombian scored in the second half, putting Steven Gerrard’s men ahead for the return leg in Armenia, despite John Lundstram seeing red just before half-time.

Aside from a Ryan Kent shot hitting the crossbar, Rangers struggled to turn possession domination into chances in the opening period.

Lundstram’s red for two sloppy yellow cards left the hosts one less man and Calvin Bassey’s demands for what would have been a soft penalty summed up a poor Rangers first-half attempt.

Scott Wright also felt that Rumyan Hovsepyan had taken him into the box early in the second half, before Morelos saw a shot cleared on the line by Didier Kadio and then headed to the side on a playful shot from Ianis Hagi.

But it is the third time an enchantment for Morelos, who digs under the legs of Ognjen Cancarevic after beating the offside trap to reach James Tavernier’s long pass in the 67th minute.

This proved enough for a Rangers side that were eliminated in Champions League qualifiers by Malmo.
