Transfers News: Gakpo, Depay and Pulisic: The three World Cup stars who are reportedly on Manchester United’s radar ahead of January

While it may be this year’s World Cup that has rightfully stolen all the headlines in recent weeks, Manchester United have been dealing with a veritable roller coaster backstage at Old Trafford.

Watching former striker Talisman Cristiano Ronaldo give a jaw-dropping interview earlier this month in which he criticized both the club and Erik ten Hag, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has departed Manchester for the second time.

Similarly, with last week’s confirmation that the Glazer family are finally actively looking to sell off the Premier League giants, United are in for what is a crucial period.

Marking their return to action on Boxing Day with a view to clinch a much coveted Champions League return, many are expecting what could be a lively January transfer market for ten Hag’s side.

With a host of scouts in Qatar and keeping our eye on this year’s World Cup, we’ve had a look at three stars who have been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Cody Gakpo – PSV

In charge of a Dutch side that are on the brink of knocking out their knockout stage ticket, Cody Gakpo has continued to gain a string of admirers after just a couple of captivating displays in Qatar.

Now bagging back-to-back World Cup goals and receiving much praise, the 23-year-old has a legion of fans at Old Trafford and it has been strongly hinted that United are inching closer to a deal for the PSV star.

Linked with a potential move to the Premier League over the summer after both Leeds and Southampton attempted their own Deadline Day, Gakpo is enjoying a record breaking start to the 2022/23 season.

Indeed, as well as playing a crucial role in extending PSV’s Europa League adventure last month, Gakpo has scored 15 goals for club and country so far this season.

Quickly becoming one of Europe’s best after young talent, The sun PSV’s local talisman reported on Sunday that they only have their sights set on a move to Old Trafford.

Memphis Depay-Barcelona

While Gakpo could be the Dutch talisman who is spearheading his country’s World Cup charge in Qatar, the 23-year-old isn’t the only Dutch striker who is on Manchester United’s radar.

Though Memphis Depay could still try to find full-game fitness after dealing with an extensive hamstring injury, the Barcelona forward was linked with a shock comeback at Old Trafford in January.

With United finally completing their messy divorce with Ronaldo, it’s no secret that the ten Hag squad are looking for a new attacking option when the window opens again.

While Depay may have endured a troubled two-year spell with the Premier League giants between 2015-2017, Sky Germany hinted over the weekend that the former Lyon ex-Lion has already held talks with the United hierarchy about a potential return.

Almost leaving Catalonia over the summer and with Barcelona having made it clear they want Depay’s salary off their books, ten Hag’s side are confident they can seal a free deal in January.

Christian Pulisic – Chelsea

Capturing attention as the USA played out a deserved 0-0 draw against England over the weekend, Christian Pulisic enjoyed an impressive start in the first ever World Cup tournament of the winter.

While there may have been some concerns over the 24-year-old’s fitness, the Chelsea ace appears to be thriving on the international stage and his recent performances have not gone unnoticed.

However, failing to really cement his plans in Graham Potter’s plans since the former Brighton boss arrived at Stamford Bridge in September, it has been suggested that Pulisic is keen to secure a transfer from the capital.

With just 18 months left on its current deal in west London and no sign of an agreed extension between the two parties, The daily mail reported on Saturday that United are keeping a close eye on the situation.

Linked to what was a shock move for the US poster boy over the summer, United’s hierarchy believe a bid in the region of £35m could tempt their Premier League rivals.
