Toure: Liverpool must provide financial backing to Klopp for renewed title pursuit

Liverpool could challenge for Premier League titles again, but only if they support Jurgen Klopp in the transfer market, says former Reds defender Kolo Toure.

Since arriving at Anfield in 2015, Klopp’s Liverpool have been extremely competitive both domestically and in Europe, winning the Premier League and Champions League as well as finishing runners-up in those competitions four times.

But this season has been a far cry from past successes, with Liverpool vying for a place in Europe rather than vying for the Premier League title and being knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16.

The Reds have spent more than £100m on forwards Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo this season, but Toure believes Klopp needs to be provided with extra buying power to freshen up the squad and put Liverpool back in contention for silver.

Speaking to Stats Perform, Touré said: “They have to look again for someone with legs and renew the team, renew the roster a bit, bring in players with the right mentality.

“They can leave again because they have a top manager with Jurgen (Klopp) and (they have to) leave him there and make sure they sign the right players for him, then they will jump up again and go fight for the title.” Premier League, definitely.

Gakpo and Nunes have combined just 15 Premier League goals this season as Liverpool have failed to keep up with title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal.

Touré believes the pair need to do more to match Klopp’s style of play, saying: “It’s definitely been a tough campaign for Liverpool but every team goes through a cycle. When you sign players, sometimes they fit, sometimes they don’t fit for some reason, you don’t know.

“He signed a few players right now, (Cody) Gakpo and another striker, (Darwin) Nunez, and they have to make sure they can fit into the team. Jürgen is such an incredible coach, he knows how he wants his team to play. But when you sign players, you expect them to fit into your team.

“At the moment these players have to show it, they have to show more for the team. They haven’t done it this season so well. Gakpo has taken time to adapt but he is looking for the right chemistry in the team and is bringing in new players to upgrade the team to make sure the team can work again. This season will be a transition for them, but next season they will definitely be better.”

Liverpool’s inability to live up to its past glory under Klopp has led some to doubt his job, with the German himself saying last month his previous successes were the only reason he was not sacked.

But Toure, who played one season at Anfield under Klopp, says the former Borussia Dortmund manager still has a lot to squeeze out of these players.

“At one time, it seems that he finished the team, it seems that he took everything from the team, and it seems that he can no longer – he would say so,” Toure added.

“At this point, he knows he can still lift this team and that’s what he was trying to do. He can help them.

“I think Jurgen is such a smart manager and if he feels like he’s gotten the most out of the team, he’ll just feel it and say it for sure. As for me, I still feel that it doesn’t take much for this Liverpool team to get back to the top of the league along with the other (teams).”
