Lionel Messi’s contract with French striker Paris Saint-Germain expires next summer, and several reports have suggested that the Argentine star plans to return for free to Barcelona, who left him two years ago.
“If Messi returns to La Liga, we will welcome him with open arms,” Rubiales said in comments published by the Spanish newspaper Sport.
He added: “I was lucky to play against Lionel Messi, but I don’t know if it was lucky or not, because I had to watch him, and he is a great player who cannot be repeated.”
And the president of the Spanish federation continued: “In the event of a possible return of Messi to the Spanish league, I will also not interfere in this matter.”
He noted: “All Spaniards and Spanish football fans abroad want the best players to be in La Liga, however the question belongs to the player and Barcelona who are negotiating on the matter.”
And Luis Rubiales concluded: “I do not interfere in the matter, no matter what happens. Messi is unique in the world of football, and I will always wish him all the best.”
