The Italian Federation issues a warning to the coach of the Saudi Arabian national team

The Italian Football Federation said on Thursday it was exploring the possibility of seeking compensation from Roberto Mancini following his sudden resignation as Azzurra coach in mid-August 2023.

The Italian Federation said in a statement: “The Federal Council has decided to appoint a legal expert to examine the existence of circumstances for a possible claim for damages.”

Roberto Mancini (58), who took charge of the Italian national team in 2018, resigned in mid-August after feeling distrust from officials, especially the president of the Italian federation, Gabriele Gravina. .

Mancini, a former Sampdoria and Lazio striker, also denounced decisions taken by Gravina without his approval, particularly regarding the composition of his coaching staff.

Then the Italian coach, who led the Squadra Azzurra to European Nations Cup glory in the summer of 2021 but failed to take his country to the 2022 World Cup final, confirmed he had no plans for the rest of his career.

But Mancini was later appointed coach of the Saudi Arabian national team until 2027, with a contract guaranteeing him an annual salary of 20 million euros.

Luciano Spalletti, who led Napoli to the Italian title last season, replaced Mancini, drawing his first match with North Macedonia 1-1 and winning his second match with Ukraine 2-1 in qualifying for the 2024 European Championship.
