Ten Hag believes Eriksen may push Manchester United to challenge Everton again

Erik ten Hag has revealed that Christian Eriksen could play for Manchester United for the first time since January, when the Red Devils host Everton on Saturday.

Eriksen has not played since winning the FA Cup over Reading in late January after suffering an ankle injury during that game.

United initially dealt well with the midfielder’s absence when they won the EFL Cup in February, although Ten Hag’s side went through three winless Premier League matches before a 1-0 win over Brentford on Wednesday.

Asked if Eriksen could return to the squad after that win against Everton, Ten Hag told Viaplay in Denmark: “We’ll see. We see it every day.

“He is progressing. He returned to team training just this week. We have two sessions. After that, we will decide if he will return to the line-up again.”

United have won 63.2% of the Premier League games Eriksen has played this season (12 out of 19), compared to 44.4% of the games he has missed (four out of nine).

The Red Devils have relied on the midfield pairing of Eriksen and Casemiro for much of this campaign, and the Brazilian will serve out the final match of his four-match home ban against the Toffees.

While Ten Hag is excited about the duo’s return, he believes that other United midfielders have stepped up in their absence, adding: “They are very important players for us, don’t get me wrong, but we have a good squad.

“[Against Brentford] there was a brilliant game in midfield with Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandez. Marcel Sabitzer was very good in his role.

“I can’t say that this midfield trio was bad, not at all. It was very good.”
