Tebas urges removal of Barcelona president from Spanish Federation

La Liga president Javier Tebas on Tuesday called for the removal of Barcelona president Joan Laporta from the board of directors of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

This is due to his possible relationship to the case, known in the media as “Negrera”.

Tebas explained that Laporta should leave the federation’s board of directors, noting that its president, Luis Rubiales, is the only person who is trusted to make this decision.

He continued: “Instead of resigning, he should be fired by the President of the Spanish Football Federation. He should not be a member of the board of directors.”

He stated: “The boards of directors of the federation are appointed by the president. These are questions that are the personal decision of his president, and not a matter of elections. It is a matter of his free decision. I think that he should fire him, and if he does not do this because he gave clarifications, then he should explain all these clarifications to us.”

In addition, he made it clear that whatever the decision regarding Laporta, this does not mean that the federation “protects” the President of Barcelona.

He revealed that he had not spoken to Laporta about the “Negrera affair”, explaining that the Barcelona president should speak to him and provide all relevant explanations.

“This is an important reputation issue. He has to give clarifications to his fans, his club and other teams.”

And he continued: “That should explain why Barcelona, with its various presidents, provided sums of money to the technical committee for referees. It’s hard to explain.”

Spanish prosecutors accused the Catalan club and its former presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosella during the trial of paying alleged millions to former referee José María Negrera on allegations of corruption, mismanagement and forgery.

The accusations come after an investigation by the Barcelona prosecutor’s office about a year ago on suspicion of providing Negrira with funds estimated at 7 million euros to a company owned by the latter in exchange for giving the club suspicious verbal advice.
