Spalletti praises Napoli’s relentless drive as they move closer to Serie A triumph

Luciano Spalletti praised Napoli’s hunger, which did not stop at their significant Serie A lead after a 4-0 thrashing of Torino on Sunday.

Victor Osimhen’s brace was accompanied by goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Tanguy Ndombele to give Napoli a 21-point lead over him at the Serie A summit after a dominant performance in Turin.

Inter could cut that significant lead when they host Juventus later on Sunday, although the Parthenopei are within arm’s reach of their first Scudetto since 1990.

Spalletti remains impressed by Napoli’s struggles and the abandonment of their march to the title stall, representing hunger and pride in supporting Partenopeia.

The Napoli manager told DAZN: “This is the 100th time I’ve gone to talk to the guys before a game, feeling like it could be fulfilling, and this is the 100th time they’ve responded by showing they’re made of a different material.

“They want to be the ones to show what it means to those who wear the Napoli shirt, who are hungry and awake, that’s a Neapolitan saying and it’s true.”

Osimhen has maintained excellent form after scoring 21 league goals this season, equaling Samuel Eto’o in 2010-11 as Africa’s top single-season scorer in Serie A.

The Nigerian international joined Edinson Cavani, Gonzalo Higuain and Dries Mertens as the only Napoli players to score 20 or more league goals in a single campaign while in possession of Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Kvaratskhelia also achieved double-digit goals and assists in his first campaign in one of Europe’s top five leagues – Werder Bremen’s Diego was the last to do so in 2006-07.

Spalletti insists, however, that Napoli are far from relying solely on those two stars.

“In the third goal, Kvara’s heel and Matias Olivera’s cross, as well as Osimhen’s header, stand out,” he added.

“But look what Giovanni Di Lorenzo does: he does a thirty-meter one-two run and takes the ball to the left so that there is a wide area to develop the action.

“It’s not that Napoli is limited to two players, it applies to all members of the team. Di Lorenzo had a great match, he’s a champion.”

Osimhen echoed his manager’s sentiment as Napoli look to repay their fans with a much-anticipated Scudetto.

“The hopes of the fans are also our hopes, they have been waiting for a long time,” the DAZN striker said.

“We are happy to be on the right track to win this prestigious trophy and we must continue like this.”
