Ruzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezayan scored in stoppage time to secure Iran’s famous 2-0 World Cup victory over Wales and keep their hopes of finishing in the 1/16 in a stunning fashion.
Wales, who sent off Wayne Hennessy late, seemed on track to somehow avoid defeat, but two great goals at the very end caused bedlam among the Iranian team and fans.
Iran’s decision to sing its national anthem after abstaining against England contributed to a tense atmosphere that sparked an early flurry, including a disallowed goal by Ali Gholizadeh.
That shot and the fact that Golizadeh and Sardar Azmoun hit the post just after the break showed that luck was on Wales’ side.
But a Hennessey red card for a wild challenge turned the tide, and Iran dealt ruthlessly and admirably with the Dragons.
