Soccer News: United States 1-0 Mexico: Robinson’s extra time goal wins the seventh gold cup crown

The United States won their seventh Gold Cup after Miles Robinson’s 118th-minute goal resulted in a 1-0 extra-time win over Mexico in Sunday’s final in Paradise, Nevada.

Atlanta United defender Robinson scored the deciding goal with a free-kick header on Kellyn Acosta’s left flank, denying Mexico a 12th continental title.

The triumph of the Gold Cup confirms the success of the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League in June, also beating El Tri in extra time in the final 3-2.

Mexico had beaten the United States in the 2019 Gold Cup final 1-0 in Chicago, with the two nations sharing their last 10 titles.

The win is a major triumph for Gregg Berhalter’s team as the United States moves away from failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

It was also the United States’ fifth 1-0 win in the entire Gold Cup, having beaten Qatar and Jamaica in the round of 16 by the same score.

Robinson was the hero with the winner, but goalkeeper Matt Turner was outstanding as both sides wasted chances for everything.

Eryk Williamson had his first chance of the match, with a bouncing volley easily picked up by Mexican goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera, while on the other side Hector Herrera had a header saved by Turner.

The United States should have taken the lead in the 26th minute when Sebastian Lletget stole the ball from the edge of the box and served Paul Arriola, but his low shot hit the post.

Turner was instrumental in maintaining the 0-0 with two key saves to deny Mexican striker Rogelio Funes Mori before Edson Alvarez pulled marginally wide.

Orbelin Pineda jumped at a golden opportunity in the 50th minute, pushing his shot wide when it was not marked inside the box, while Alvarez desperately blocked Matthew Hoppe’s chance in the 71st minute.

Arriola dismissed another free-kick chance he liked a lot as Talavera stifled his shot on goal.

In extra time, Talavera made a good ground save on Gyasi Zardes in the 106th minute, before Robinson’s header decided the game.
