Soccer News: Tuchel expected Kane to join Man City, Chelsea move “never close”

Thomas Tuchel expected Harry Kane to sign for Manchester City before the transfer window closes, but finds it “nice” that the striker has stayed at Tottenham.

Blues boss Tuchel said late last season that he would appreciate the chance to work with Kane as speculations about the England captain’s future spread.

Kane chose to stay at Spurs after it looked like the prolific forward would be on his way to Premier League City champions at some point, as Chelsea broke the transfer record to bring Romelu Lukaku back.

Chelsea will travel to Tottenham on Sunday for a London derby and, before the game, Tuchel made it clear how he never pushed for Kane’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Asked how far the European champions have come to make a move for the player, the Chelsea manager replied: “I never had a list with his name and I never went to Marina. [Granovskaia, Chelsea director] to tell her to buy it.

But I think the club has solved the situations. There are a lot of people around the players; there are agents, consultants and people in between, so we got some insight from these people, but it has never been so close that we have had to experience rivalry.

“We know about the rivalry, but I have a feeling it has never been this far.”

Tuchel says he wouldn’t have been worried if Kane ended up joining City, as Chelsea don’t fear any of their Premier League rivals.

“I thought it was going to happen [Kane joining City] and I was not afraid, but if that happened, I would have been very interested in how it would change City’s style of play, “said the German.

“We are not afraid of anyone; we accept any other team. Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, are the teams with strong, strong teams and these are the guys [such as Kane] you want to compete and it is normal that they fight for the best players.

“I thought it was going to happen. On the one hand, I was happy that he stayed because it’s nice that in football players only play for one club.

“I have absolutely nothing to do with Tottenham of course, but if you think of Tottenham you think of Harry Kane, if you think of [Lionel] Messi you immediately think of Barcelona.

“It is very difficult for you to play for another club and it is the same with Harry Kane. On that side I like it and part of my personality is still a fan, so from that moment I like it and I also think it’s nice that Romelu is back at Chelsea. Some things are fine and shouldn’t be changed ”.
