Thiago Alcantara will miss Liverpool’s friendlies against Bologna on Thursday, although coach Jurgen Klopp insists the midfielder’s injury is not serious.
The Spanish international joined the Reds’ preseason retreat in Evian last week after helping his country to the Euro 2020 semi-finals.
Klopp explained that the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona playmaker arrived with a pre-existing complaint and is unwilling to take excessive risks with the Premier League season starting just nine days away.
“Thiago came here with a little problem. He has three weeks off and the little problem is still there [there], which he felt, “Klopp told his club’s official website.
“We are not taking any risks. It’s part of training parts and in these little things it looks great, but it’s more on longer distances where it struggles slightly.
“We have to make sure it will be resolved and there we are. I think it will be next week, [at the] last, in full training. “
Liverpool will play consecutive 60-minute friendlies against their Serie A opponents as they step up preparations for an opening weekend trip to the newly promoted Norwich City to the English top flight.
The Brazilian trio Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino are back with the team and will likely play for 30 minutes each.
“They will have play time. We have to use the games now. We’ll see. We play 60 minutes twice, there is an hour break between the two games, so we can give them 30 minutes to play, “explained Klopp.
“Ali maybe slightly longer but probably 30 is enough for the first few minutes back on goal in a competitive match.
“So it’s really good that we can do it and everyone gets minutes. Most of the players will now obviously play 60 minutes, but those who came back later probably 30 minutes at the most. But that’s cool.
