Soccer News: Spain must adapt to shock defeat at World Cup, says Salgado

Michel Salgado believes Spain’s young Luis Enrique have a future, but says they have to adapt after the shock knockout from the World Cup.

La Roja were stunned by a penalty after a goalless draw with Morocco in Tuesday’s round of 16 to shorten a tournament in which they were one of the favourites.

This comes after they finished second in their group behind Japan after a surprise loss to Samurai Blue and likely marks the end of the road for several senior players.

But former Real Madrid and Spain defender Salgado believes that with one of the youngest teams in Qatar 2022, led by the likes of Gavi, Pedri and Ansu Fati, the opportunities for the national team are still great.

“If we want to win again, we have to do everything from scratch and start working with a new one,” he told Stats Perform. “I think this is a team that can give much more at the next World Cup.

“This is a team with great talent, there is no doubt about that. I believe that now we cannot be fatalists. On the contrary, I think we should be positive.

“We are not going to change our identity. Spain is a country that is measured by football possession and control of the game. What do we have [to do is] adapt to the present.

“I think it’s time to analyze how we can be more efficient with what we have and look for that group that can come back to win the World Cup.”

Salgado has come to terms with the disappointment of Spain’s shameful departure, but says it’s unfair to compare their accomplishments to those of a team that dominated world football more than a decade ago.

“Obviously, this is a disappointment for the fans,” he added. “I have to see it from a different angle. I think that this is a young team, a team in times of total change.

“Pressure, I think, is the first thing we need to erase. We have to start from scratch and start making the most out of the players we have.”
