Soccer News: Ronaldo breaks Ali Daei’s world record by becoming the best international men’s scorer of all time

Cristiano Ronaldo is now the top scorer in international men’s football history after breaking Ali Daei’s world record.

The Portugal star, who completed a fantastic return to Manchester United this week, scored in Wednesday’s final in the World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, scoring his 110th international goal.

Ronaldo’s record-breaking goal came in the last minute of regular time. Moments after seeing a free kick saved by Gavin Bazunu, he was on hand to plant a signature header in the lower left corner from Goncalo Guedes’ tantalizing cross.

That header restored parity in Faro, and then doubled his tally in the dying embers of injury time to claim the points and bring his total to 111 goals.

He scored two goals in the Euro 2020 match with France on June 23 to equal Daei on 109 goals in senior matches for Portugal.

The 36-year-old, along with Iranian great Daei, is one of only two men to score more than 100 times in international matches.

He scored his first goal in Portugal in June 2004, headed from Luis Figo’s cross in the 2-1 group stage defeat to future European champions Greece.

Ronaldo’s 100th goal came 16 years later when he scored a free-kick in the Nations League’s 2-0 win against Sweden in September last year.

His favorite opponents are Sweden and Lithuania, against whom he has scored seven goals.
