Soccer News: Rashford gives final chance to sue Kane’s Tottenham Hotspur for World Cup

This week’s World Cup preliminary lineups are on the way and Gareth Southgate, despite a few headaches from late injuries, has likely already scored the bulk of his England group.

However, some questions remain, and arguably none more prominent than in attack, where Harry Kane is an established starter, but the understudy role has been divided among an ever-changing roster.

Since the 2018 Russian Championship, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ollie Watkins, Callum Wilson and Danny Ings have played and scored for England. But either form or suitability left each of them.

This leaves three contenders: Tammy Abraham, whose place at Roma is no longer guaranteed, Ivan Toni, a recent call-up who has yet to make his international debut, and Marcus Rashford.

Abraham and Tony were included in Southgate’s last England squad, although neither played against Italy and Germany where the Three Lions needed goals. Meanwhile, an injury left Rashford unable to regain his position in the group.

At one point, Rashford was guaranteed a spot on every international team, if not necessarily every team.

The Manchester United player has earned 46 caps for England, and all but three have been since Southgate’s appointment in September 2016.

Yet despite all these allegations of Southgate challenging form to pick his ‘favourites’, Rashford was penalized for playing below par for United, scoring just five goals in 32 games last season.

Rashford’s latest action for England was his missed penalty in the Euro 2020 final against Italy after coming on as a substitute in the last minute of extra time at Wembley. He has not competed for his country since before this tournament.

But the 24-year-old has returned to something close to his best form this season, scoring five goals and three assists in 11 appearances for United. In this regard, Rashford is far ahead of Abraham (two goals and one assist in 13 games), although he is still behind Player of the Month Tony (eight goals and three assists in 11 games).

The situation with Toney is clear, except that Southgate is not looking for a forward to lead the line against Iran on November 21st.

Only Jordan Pickford (14 starts, 1380 minutes) and John Stones (14 starts, 1324 minutes) have started more games or played more minutes for Southgate in major tournaments than Kane (13 starts, 1222 minutes).

Assuming Kane doesn’t have an injury that would change the whole conversation, Rashford auditions for the position of main attacking reinforcements – which he filled in twice at Southgate in the past.

At the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020, no England player has played more matches (10) or more minutes (205) as a substitute than Rashford.

In 63 minutes on the bench for United this season, Rashford has scored two goals and provided another assist. Abraham has yet to score a goal in 91 such minutes for Roma, with Toni making his only assist in 18 minutes.

When Rashford was substituted as a substitute against Newcastle United on Sunday due to illness, he showed how dangerous his relentless run at the end of matches can be.

Both he and Fred missed huge chances, but only Casemiro (0.45-0.01 xG, 0.44 xA) scored more combined expected goals and expected assists in the entire match than Rashford (0.43-0.31 xG , 0.12 xA) in 18 minutes. cameo against the Premier League’s meanest defense.

On this occasion, Rashford appeared, as he could instead of Kane, as a centre-forward after he was replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo. But his versatility is a key quality Tony lacks.

For United this season, five of Rashford’s nine starts have come as a lone striker, with the other four coming from left wing.

In the long run, his starts through the middle were much less regular. In 21 caps for England, Rashford played 10 lefts, 3 rights and 8 centre-forwards. Of those eight, seven were in attacking pairs.

His only appearance with the Three Lions in the role that Kane was used to was in the Nations League Final when he lost 3–1 to the Netherlands, in which Rashford was replaced by Kane at half-time after opening the scoring.

Should England need a spark in Qatar – whether as a starter or as a substitute – Southgate will likely turn to a player who can complement Kane rather than replace him, perhaps explaining the Abraham and Tony watch briefings in September.

It is important to note that Rashford has previously supported Kane well, most notably in a 3-2 win over Spain in October 2018 when Kane scored a second goal for Rashford and each one secured a further assist to Raheem Sterling who is also set to start again in the World Cup .

With Kane and Tottenham visiting Old Trafford on Wednesday to select a midweek Premier League game, Rashford is no doubt hoping to be back in the United XI ahead of Ronaldo.

But if he plays on the left instead or steps in as a seasoned striker later in the match, England hope could give Southgate a better idea of what he can expect if he is selected next month.
