Soccer News: Rashford could miss the first three months of the season after opting for shoulder surgery

0

Marcus Rashford could miss nearly three months of the 2021-22 Premier League season after choosing to undergo surgery for a long-term shoulder injury.

Rashford is said to have suffered a muscle tear in his shoulder last November, but played through the pain for the rest of the season, and then played for England at Euro 2020.

The striker chose to postpone treatment for his injury until after the European Championships to take part in a tournament where England eventually reached the final, even though Rashford was one of three players to miss a penalty in the decisive match on penalties against Italy.

He played for just 84 minutes of the England campaign in total, failing to score, assist or create an opportunity.

The 23-year-old’s form had suffered towards the end of 2020-21, with his last 10 Premier League appearances earning just five goal contributions.

But Rashford is also rumored to have reported foot complaints and grievances for most of the two years, meaning a stint on the sidelines could provide him with much-needed rest.

After initial reports surfaced earlier this month that Rashford was undergoing surgery, United decided to wait and seek further medical advice before making a final decision.

But it was confirmed on Friday that Rashford was really going to go under the knife.

“Following a consultation between Marcus, the manager, the club’s medical staff and specialists, Marcus will be undergoing an upcoming surgery to fix his shoulder injury,” read a United statement.

Now he will focus on rehabilitation to return as soon as possible. “

United have not released a timetable for his return, but reports suggest he could miss 12 weeks of action. The club kicked off their Premier League season at home to Leeds United on 14 August.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first game leading United in December 2018, Victor Lindelof (10,289 minutes) is the only player to play more regularly for Rashford’s Red Devils (9,671 minutes) in all competitions.

While Harry Maguire (11,197 minutes) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (10,555 minutes) played more in the same period, including matches for other clubs, Rashford likely plays a more intense role.

United should be well-stocked to cope with Rashford’s absence, however, with Anthony Martial poised to return from an injury absence, while options from Mason Greenwood, Edinson Cavani and Daniel James have been added with the arrival of Jadon Sancho.
