Soccer News: Qatar, host of the World Cup, received the 2023 Asian Cup

Qatar will host a second major tournament in eight months after this year’s World Cup host country took over the 2023 Asian Cup.

Next year’s tournament was scheduled to take place in China, but due to the Chinese government’s strict zero-COVID policy, it was confirmed earlier in 2022 that the competition would be held elsewhere.

Qatar, which is gearing up to host the World Cup in November and December, has been selected to host the tournament, which will run from June 16 to July 16, 2023 and will feature 24 teams.

This will mean the defending Asian Cup champions will have a chance to defend their title in their home country, with Qatar winning in the United Arab Emirates in 2019.

There has been controversy over Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup this year, with particular criticism regarding the country’s human rights record.

The World Cup will start on November 20 in Doha, when Qatar will face Ecuador.
