Soccer News: Nagelsmann greets ‘great player’ Choupo-Moting after Bayern’s masterclass

Erik Maxim Choupo-Moting earned the applause of Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann after starring in Sunday’s 5-0 thrashing of Freiburg.

Facing a side unbeaten in their last 11 games, Bayern thrashed Freiburg with Choupo-Moting leading the charge with one goal and one assist.

The former Mainz, Schalke and Paris Saint-Germain player played 66 minutes until Jamal Musiala got an out.

It was the 33-year-old Choupo-Moting’s first start for Bayern this season. By the time he left the field, the Cameroonian had convinced coach Nagelsmann that he could have many more starts this season.

“Csupo did very well, he took his success on the field to the field and of course he deserved to play a little earlier, maybe at some point,” said Nagelsmann.

“I am very happy that I have it. We know we can rely on Shupo. He scored a great goal. He is a great player in every way. We are happy to have him.”

Choupo-Moting hopes that an outstanding display will also lead to more participation. This was the first time he played more than 21 minutes in a 2022-23 Bundesliga game.

The striker told DAZN: “Every day in training I try to step on the gas and the boys see it. I know what I can do and what I can do to help the team.

“Julian knows I see it that way and I told him so. It’s nice that everything worked out, and of course I want to continue to play a lot and achieve success with the team.

Bayern came into the game with just one win in their last six Bundesliga matches, four of which ended in draws.

Oliver Kahn, the club’s general manager, demanded better results and Bayern complied with that request and moved to second place in the Bundesliga, four points behind top striker Union Berlin. They jumped above Freiburg with victory.

Nagelsmann said: “I am very pleased with the result and the three points. There was definitely pressure before the game because Freiburg is successful, playing good football and deserves to be at the top of the table. The guys did a very good job and were very focused.

“In defense, we had one very dangerous situation in the first half, when Freiburg could not finish perfectly. I think we played good football with a great ending. A big compliment to the team.”

Bayern are now between Union and Freiburg, after 10 rounds, and are in the top three that few could have predicted at the start of the season.

Freiburg deserves to be there because they play very well,” Nagelsmann said at the post-match press conference. Union are one of the best teams in the league and they will likely continue to do so over the next few weeks.”
