Soccer News: Mexico equalized in the opening of the Gold Cup defense against T&T

Mexico drew 0-0 against Trinidad & Tobago in Arlington on Saturday in the opening match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup title defense.

El Tri was left frustrated by a stubborn Soca Warriors backline, led brilliantly by goalkeeper Marvin Phillip who made numerous strong saves and was named Man of the Match.

The squad holders thought they had found a winner in the second stoppage time when Rogelio Funes Mori hid Jesus Gallardo’s low cut, but the latter was marginally stopped offside.

Mexico dominated the game, with 30 four-pointers, including seven on goal, along with 83 percent ball possession, but were unable to capitalize.

Hirving Lozano had to be replaced early in the first half with a suspected concussion and neck injury, before Jesus Corona tested Phillip and Hector Herrera pulled out of distance.

Herrera’s heel pass put Orbelin Pineda in shape after the break, but he shot straight to Phillip.

Mexico have built up the pressure in the last 20 minutes, with Phillip brilliantly denying Funes Mori’s poke after hitting his chest inside the box in the 76th minute, before a stunning one-handed block to deny Corona.

Both teams will return to the field on Wednesday in Group A, with Mexico facing Guatemala in Dallas and Trinidad & Tobago facing El Salvador in Frisco.
