Soccer News: Mexico 2-1 Canada: Herrera sends El Tri to the Gold Cup final, winning in the 99th minute

Hector Herrera scored a dramatic ninth-minute stoppage winner to send Mexico into the Gold Cup final against the United States after a tense 2-1 semi-final win over Canada in Houston.

The Atletico Madrid midfielder fired a low shot from the edge of the box after substitute Rodolfo Pizarro was cut, clinching the win on Thursday.

Mexico defender Carlos Salcedo had his penalty saved in the second half when Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau concocted some great stops.

The defending champions had taken the lead with an Orbelin Pineda penalty at the stroke of half-time, but Canada equalized against Tajon Buchanan with a goal in the 57th minute.

Mexico will now have a chance to claim their 12th Gold Cup when they face the six-time United States champions in Sunday’s final. El Tri has won four of the last six Gold Cup titles and qualifies for the final for the fourteenth time.

The two-time Canada winner was chasing his first Gold Cup final appearance since 2000, but missed the chance.

Canadian forward Stephen Eustaquio fired over the crossbar before Alistair Johnston desperately blocked a Jesus Gallardo chance in the 27th minute.

Mexico won a penalty in the first half of injury following a VAR review on Doneil Henry’s foul, with Pineda coldly sending Crepeau to the wrong side.

New England Revolution striker Buchanan equalized in the 12th minute of the second half, entering the box and slipping a low shot behind Mexican goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera.

Mexico then had a chance to regain the spot advantage after another VAR review, but Crepeau dived to his right to block Salcedo’s shot.

Theo Corbeanu tested Talavera with a curling shot, before Crepeau parried at point blank range on a Mexico corner.

Mexico would find a way, with the latest winner from vice-captain Herrera.
