Soccer News: Mahrez shines as Manchester City beat Barnsley

Riyad Mahrez put on a dazzling spectacle when Manchester City swept Barnsley 4-0 in a friendly at Etihad Campus on Saturday.

Mahrez was City’s record signing when he joined Leicester City in 2018 and Jack Grealish is reportedly close to making that distinction for himself, with the Premier League champions rumored to have submitted a bid from the worth £ 100 million for the Aston Villa star.

Some observers predicted that Grealish may experience the kind of slow start to life under Pep Guardiola that Mahrez endured three years ago, but the Algeria winger has shown himself in full swing against league opponents overwhelmed by City.

Mahrez charged down the right flank to retrieve Ruben Dias’ raking ball and crossed for Samuel Edozie who opened the shot on 23 minutes: the teenage striker also scored during the midweek win over Preston North End.

Another youth player, Ben Knight, doubled the lead after Mahrez released a Joao Cancelo in the background and the right fielder jumped into action himself in the 34th minute when he landed a wonderful half volley from center. by Benjamin Mendy.

It could have been worse for Barnsley before half-time when Cole Palmer pulled away from Cauley Woodrow to win a penalty, although Bradley Collins guessed correctly to save the young playmaker’s penalty.

Mahrez was inevitably involved again when Nathan Ake scored 4-0 midway through the second half, as Ilkay Gundogan and Oleksandr Zinchenko stepped off the bench to enjoy their first pre-season action after returning from Euro 2020.

City will face Blackpool on Tuesday in their final friendly before next weekend’s Community Shield match against Leicester at Wembley.
