Soccer News: Lukaku “happy and lucky” to be back at Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku feels “happy and blessed” after sealing a return to Chelsea, a club that has always remained close to him.

Lukaku led Inter Milan to their first league title in over a decade last season, scoring 30 goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions for Antonio Conte’s side.

Conte wanted to bring the powerful forward back to Chelsea – who sold him to Everton in 2014 – during his time in office, but Lukaku has instead moved to Manchester United.

Now 28, Lukaku has returned to Stamford Bridge following a transfer worth £ 97.5m, a club record and just under the British record Manchester City paid at Aston Villa for Jack Grealish.

“I am happy and fortunate to have returned to this wonderful club,” said Lukaku, who joined Chelsea from Anderlecht in 2011 but failed to score in his first spell at the club, told the Blues official website.

“It has been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I come back with a lot of experience and more mature.

The relationship I have with this club means a lot to me, as you know. I cheered Chelsea as a kid and now coming back and trying to help them win more titles is an incredible feeling.

“The way the club is going fits perfectly with my ambitions at 28 and just out of winning Serie A. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and we hope we can be very successful together.

“Since leaving Chelsea it has been a long journey with many ups and downs, but these experiences have made me strong and the challenge is to try to help the team win more trophies. I’m looking forward to getting started and helping the club achieve more success. “

Lukaku represents Chelsea’s first big deal during the transfer window, with Olivier Giroud traded to Milan.

Chelsea manager Marina Granovskaia added: “Romelu Lukaku is simply one of the best strikers and scorers in the world.

“We are absolutely delighted to bring him back to the club he loves and are thrilled to add his talent to our Champions League winning team.

“We are obviously trying to build on last season’s success and Lukaku will play an important role in achieving our goals. I’m sure all Chelsea fans will join me in saying ‘welcome home, Romelu!’ “

Thomas Tuchel’s side will start their new Premier League season on Saturday against Crystal Palace.
