Mohamed Salah has insisted that Liverpool’s victory over Manchester City does not mean they are back in the title race despite a hard-fought victory over Premier League champions at Anfield on Sunday.

The Egyptian scored the only goal in a typically fast-paced clash, rushing for Alisson’s long pass before edging Ederson with 14 minutes to go.

The defeat was City’s first in the league this season, but was also only Liverpool’s third of nine league appearances, with Jurgen Klopp’s side remaining in eighth place, 14 points behind leaders Arsenal and trailing City and Tottenham on 10 with a game in hand.

Salah said that he and his teammates are still “far” from the top, but will try to get back to it in time.

“No, we are still far from [the title race]”, he told Sky Sports. “We just need to focus on each game and take it in turn, we don’t have to think about the title at the moment.

“Of course, personally, I always love to play for the title, and in my head we will fight for it … We do not need to feel pressure, because there is still a gap from the first and second.

“You can see everyone here [is] incredible, and we should be in a better position than we are. The players are happy to win again and I think it will give us a good boost for the next games.”

Virgil van Dijk and the rest of the Liverpool defender did a great job of silencing Erling Haaland as the Norwegian still landed six shots but was stopped by Reds stopper Alisson.

“It takes a lot to score three points. [against City]”, the Dutchman told Sky Sports. “It will always be very intense.”

The crowd at Anfield were at their best as the home supporters led Liverpool to victory and Van Dijk acknowledged their contribution.

“It’s always like this [the atmosphere] and when certain moments happened in the game, it added fuel to the fire, ”he said.

“It all started with the hard work we put in on the pitch and that is the bare minimum expected here at this great football club.

“This is what we gave away, and the energy that we returned today [from the fans] was definitely needed to push us forward and keep a 1-0 lead.

“They played a big role and that’s what we need for the rest of the season, especially after a difficult start.”
