Soccer News: LATEST: Real Madrid signs Camavinga, rising star of France, from Rennes

Real Madrid have announced the purchase of midfielder Eduardo Camavinga from Rennes.

The 18-year-old French international has signed a six-year contract with Los Blancos in a deal that could cost up to € 45 million, according to reports.

It is the first time Madrid have spent money on a transfer since 2019, when they signed Eden Hazard from Chelsea for € 100m.

Camavinga had been linked to a number of major European clubs, including Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, but Real Madrid decided to make a late push to sign him before the transfer deadline after it became clear that the landing of Kylian Mbappe from PSG would have been impractical.

The boy, who has made 71 Ligue appearances for Rennes and 88 in total, is Real’s second signing in this window after David Alaba’s transfer from Bayern Munich on a free transfer.

At 18 years and nine months, he is the youngest outfield player to have played so many games in the French top flight since Basile Boli in 1985.

Making his senior international debut on 8 September last year, Camavinga was the youngest player to do so since Maurice Gastiger faced Luxembourg 107 years ago.

Only Gastiger (17 years and five months) scored for Bleus at a younger age than Camavinga, who was 17 years and 11 months when he scored against Switzerland last October.

In 2019-20, Camavinga’s groundbreaking season at Rennes, he attempted 105 tackles in top flight football. Among the midfielders of the top five European leagues, only Declan Rice (116) and Wilfred Ndidi (129) have tried more.

Camavinga will provide midfield competition for Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Federico Valverde in Madrid.
