Joan Laporta says pressured head coach Ronald Koeman will remain as head coach regardless of Barcelona’s La Liga result at Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
Koeman would be on the verge of sacking after a 3-0 Champions League defeat at Benfica on Wednesday.
The cash-strapped Blaugranas are last in Group E after being beaten by the same score at home by Bayern Munich and entered seventh place in La Liga at the weekend.
Club legend Xavi, Roberto Martinez and Erik ten Hag have been linked to Barça’s work, with Koeman increasingly under scrutiny.
Barça president Laporta has revealed that Koeman will remain in the role even if his team is beaten by champions Diego Simeone.
“Koeman will remain as a manager regardless of the result. Will remain. It deserves a margin of confidence. He loves Barça, he is a point of reference. I talked to him and made my own conclusions. He took Barça at a difficult time, “said Laporta.
“He may have had moments of discouragement but he recovered his spirits. After talking with him, I see that he has faith in this team, especially as soon as he has recovered the injured. From that moment on we will have more room for maneuver.
“We didn’t have a cold relationship. It is a good and honest relationship. He’s a good person, thinks the same about me and we’re all trying to change things for the better. “
Koeman said in a press conference on Friday that he had not spoken to Laporta amid speculation about his future.
“The club didn’t tell me anything, really,” the former Netherlands manager said at a press conference on Friday, teasing his team’s clash with Atletico.
“I found out the president was here this morning but I didn’t see him. We were training but I’m still the same.
“I have ears and eyes and I already know that a lot of things are leaking out. Sure it’s true but to me, once again, he didn’t tell me anything.
“I’m not the most important thing, but the team. I’m here for the love of the club. I came here during a complicated situation, more complicated than the first day.
Everyone has their own opinion but I’m only interested in the players and the Atletico match. “
