Soccer News: ‘Killed by your own fans’ – Liverpool defender Flaherty offended over social media abuse

Liverpool defender Jilly Flaherty has spoken out about her grief over the abuse on social media by disgruntled Reds fans, saying it “takes it to another level”.

The former Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham player, who previously played for England, moved to Liverpool in July.

Flaherty, 31, says her own team’s fans stabbed her to death on social media following Women’s Super League matches.

Her comments drew a mostly sympathetic response, with some Liverpool supporters insisting that such critics were in the minority.

Flaherty tweeted after Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday: “Joining a new team is hard in the first place but not getting the approval of the fans and just getting killed on social media after most games by your own fans. is [heartbreaking].

“I’ve never cared about opposition fans, but when your own fans do it, it goes to the next level.”
