Soccer News: ‘I’m able to get out of this’ – Gerrard ready for Aston Villa fight

Steven Gerrard remains adamant he’s the man to get Aston Villa out of their bad form, saying “I’m capable of getting out of this.”

With Villa languishing in the Premier League relegation zone, having won just two of the first 10 games of the season, Gerrard’s position as manager has been called into question.

Ahead of a trip to Fulham on Thursday, Villa have won only one of their last eight league matches (D3 L4), scoring just five goals.

Earlier this week, there were reports that Villa could make a daring move in favor of former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino if they decide to ditch Gerrard’s services, but the former Liverpool midfielder is determined to fight.

“I’m here to fight and lead every minute of every day, and I have complete confidence and confidence in myself that I can make a difference,” Gerrard said on Wednesday.

“I am ready for these periods because I believe and know that I can get through them if I stay true to myself. I will stand up to this, I am ready for this, and I will show everyone that I am capable of getting out of this.

“I accept how I’m being judged right now, but there’s no one on the planet more determined to change that than myself, and that’s all I need to focus on, which are the following three points.”

Only Wolverhampton (3.5%) have a lower shot conversion rate than Villa in the Premier League this season (6%), and Gerrard’s side have scored just seven goals in 116 attempts.

Key to their problems has been the poor form of Philippe Coutinho, who has yet to score this season, but Gerrard believes his former Liverpool team mate will succeed.

“With his age and talent, I have complete confidence and faith in Phil,” Gerrard added. “Obviously the statistics at the moment suggest he is not in the best place or in the best shape, which we all understand.

“But we, as staff, and I, as his manager, will give him all the support he needs. You don’t lose talent, you don’t lose class. It’s still there.

“Confidence and belief can change very quickly, so my opinion of Phil Coutinho will never change because I see it every day. He just has to reproduce it in games.”
