Soccer News: ‘I don’t know if VAR didn’t pay attention’ – Ghana national team boss angered by Ronaldo’s penalty decision

Ghana coach Otto Addo balked at the decision to award a penalty to Portugal in their thrilling win over the Black Stars on Thursday, saying: “I don’t know if VAR has noticed.”

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score a goal in five World Cup events when he opened the scoring from the 974 stadium spot as Portugal eventually fell 3-2 to the winner.

However, Ghana was outraged by referee Ismail Elfat’s decision to award a penalty, believing that Mohammed Salisu had won the ball by challenging the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Addo criticized Elfat’s performance and reported that he was denied the opportunity to speak with him after Ghana’s defeat.

Asked if Ronaldo benefited from a favorable decision, Addo said: “I think you should ask the referee about it. I don’t have proof of that, but we were playing ball, then there was contact.

“I don’t know what they were doing, I don’t know if VAR didn’t pay attention to it.

“If I look at that moment, it’s unbelievable. If you watch the replay, we were playing ball. Actually it was a foul against us.

“The game was tight, we made a few mistakes to concede the second and third goals, opening the lanes for them. A little unlucky.

“If we were lucky, we could score one point. The referee was not in our favor. In my opinion, our yellow cards were well deserved, but for me, holding the jerseys is also a yellow card. I don’t know what was wrong, but it really wasn’t in our favor.

“I asked some FIFA people if I could talk to the referee for a bit in a calm and quiet manner, but they said he was in a meeting and that was not possible.

“I think they have match analysis, so that’s true, but of course you have a few minutes for the manager.”

Ghana defender Tariq Lamptey was also asked about the decision and replied: “I think you saw it. You can express your opinion.”

The African nation has lost their first match in three of their four World Cup appearances (P1), but Lamptey believes they had a lot of positives.

“Of course I would like to win,” Lamptey said. “There are a lot of world-class players on their team, but we felt like we could have gotten the result we deserved and we were so close to it.

“We know we played well, but it’s difficult because we know we could get something. We will put that energy into our next game and do our best.”
