Soccer News: Barcelona defender Mingueza could miss the start of the new season

Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza will miss the start of the 2021-22 La Liga season due to injury sustained during the Olympics with Spain.

The 22-year-old has played three times for Spain’s finalists in Tokyo, including winning the quarter-finals against Cote d’Ivoire for hamstring damage.

Mingueza underwent a scan at Barcelona’s medical center on Tuesday and it was confirmed that he is ready for a short time on the sidelines.

Barcelona have not provided a time frame for Mingueza’s recovery, but reports from Spain suggest he will face around two weeks.

The Accademia del Barça product made 39 club appearances last season, 27 of which came to LaLiga when the Catalan giants finished behind Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

Mingueza has won more tackles in 90 minutes (1.56) than any other Barcelona player in the league in 2020-21.

It’s the latest blow for Ronald Koeman, who has to deal with Lionel Messi’s unexpected departure and the news on Monday that new forward Sergio Aguero will be out for 10 weeks with a calf injury.

Barcelona kick off the post-Messi era with a home game against Real Sociedad on Sunday, before heading to Athletic Bilbao the following weekend.
