Soccer News: Abraham strikes for Chelsea’s friendly win over Arsenal

Chelsea enjoyed a positive pre-season outing by beating London rivals Arsenal 2-1 at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Thomas Tuchel’s side took a well-deserved lead at half-time thanks to a fine shot from Kai Havertz, who scored the winning goal in the Champions League final in May.

Havertz landed a high shot behind Bernd Leno after being thrown into space by Timo Werner, who three minutes later missed a good chance to double.

The Gunners, who signed new signing Ben White at half-time, equalized in the 69th minute with Granit Xhaka headed from Nicolas Pepe’s cross.

However, Chelsea’s lead was restored in four minutes when Tammy Abraham scored a definite goal under Leno after a mistake by Hector Bellerin.

Arsenal were supposed to get the equalizer when Joe Willock crashed a shot over the crossbar and the ball seemed to bounce over the line, but with goal line technology not in use, it was not awarded.

Mikel Arteta will also be worried about seeing midfielder Thomas Partey forced out with what appeared to be a first-half ankle injury.

Chelsea now face Tottenham on Wednesday before Arsenal take on neighbors north London on 8 August.
