Diego Simeone thinks that Atlético Madrid have a very talented team, but he, as a manager, is letting them down.
Atlético were La Liga champions back in 2020-21, but they are far behind in the title race this season.
Barcelona are leading with 37 points, while Simeone’s team is trailing with 24 points and is in fifth place.
But the coach believes his team is still capable of challenging, suggesting he is to blame for their difficult campaign.
“We have a great line-up – four players in the World Cup final,” Simeone said on Wednesday before the match against Elche.
“Maybe the one who doesn’t give everything is the coach. We have a great team. I am someone I have to improve so they can raise their level in La Liga.

“These are more or less the same names that have won La Liga, except [Kieran] Trippier and [Luis] Suarez.
“The foundation of the La Liga starting XI is here; eat [Angel] correa, [Yannick] Carrasco, Joao [Felix], [Jose] Jimenez…we added [Antoine] Griezmann.
“A coach is someone who fails more than anyone else.”
For this reason, Simeone is not bothered by the January transfer window, instead focusing on getting his key people in shape and shooting.
“When we have been on all four legs, we have become strong. We need all four legs and that strength,” he said. “We have proven this over the years and will continue to do so.”
