Serie A’s oldest scorer, Ibrahimovic, expresses pride in his achievement

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was “proud” of being Serie A’s oldest scorer, but that was little consolation after AC Milan lost 3-1 to Udinese.

At the age of 41 years and 166 days, Ibrahimović overtook former Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta (41 years and 25 days – May 2007) from a first-half stoppage penalty at the Stade Friuli.

Ibrahimović, who captained Milan, took the penalty midway through the goal after being fortunately allowed to overrun it after seeing his initial shot saved by Marco Silvestri before being ordered by VAR to be repeated after Beto Udinese was tampered with.

This equalized after a nine-minute strike by Roberto Pereira, but Beto restored Udinese’s lead just two minutes after Milan equalized before Kingsley Eizibue ended the game in the second half.

“It would have been much better if Costacurta had kept that record,” Ibrahimovic told Sky Sport Italia after the game. “I am proud to be part of the history of this club, a great club that has lost a lot of great players and that means a lot to me.

“This goal didn’t give me three points in my first captaincy and unfortunately the game didn’t go the way we wanted. I felt very good, I didn’t play in the starting lineup for 14 months, the main thing is that I feel good, and if I am as good as I am today, I can play, I have no doubt about that.”

The Rossoneri have suffered seven league defeats, five of which have come in their last nine games, losing just four en route to winning the Scudetto last season.

Ibrahimovic suggested that the teams put in a little more effort this season against Milan as defending champions.

“Playing for the Italian champions means that every team meets you as if it were a final, it’s different from last year,” he said. “This year we have more pressure in all matches, which is normal, but you have to be ready because everyone wants to beat you.

“This team has no experience of playing as champions of Italy, we cannot show the same high results in all games, but this is not an excuse, this is just an explanation to understand the situation.”
