Jose Mourinho’s time in Rome began with a 10-0 defeat to minnows Montecatini in a training match on Thursday.
After being sacked by Tottenham, Mourinho, a former manager of Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Inter, was named the new Roma manager in May, replacing compatriot Paulo Fonseca.
Mourinho’s first official match on the bench will come in Roma’s Serie A debut match against Fiorentina in August, and the Giallorossi have emphatically started their pre-season against Serie D side Montecatini.
Borja Mayoral scored a hat-trick, with his first goal coming after Carles Perez and Gianluca Mancini scored to bring Roma 2-0.
Riccardo Calafiori scored a quick follow-up and an own goal from Montecatini put Roma ahead 5-0 at half-time.
Nicolo Zaniolo converted a penalty after Mayoral took a second, with the loan from Real Madrid completing his hat-trick after Nicola Zalewski and Amadou Diawara went to the scoresheet.
Ternana, a debut in Serie B, is next for Roma, who three days later will face Triestina, a Serie C team, before concluding the pre-season preparation with friendlies against Debrecen, the former club of Mourinho, Porto and Real Betis.
The first training match of the pre-season has just ended: a 10-0 win against the guests of Montecatini.
