New Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is optimistic about his team’s progress in the pre-season after beating Lugano on penalties one month into the Serie A 2021-22 season.
Inzaghi took over from the late Antonio Conte to the Italian champions this low season with high expectations after last season’s Scudetto breakthrough.
Inter’s change of leadership off-season together with the absence of several players in the pre-season, following the commitments of Euro 2020 and Copa America, has created some uncertainty about their preparation for the defense of the title.
The Nerazzurri’s debut match of the new Serie A championship is at home on 22 August against Genoa.
“The club is doing a great job and we will be ready for August 22,” Inzaghi told Inter TV after Sunday’s 2-2 win against Lugano, won by the Nerazzurri on penalties.
“It would be wonderful if we could celebrate with our fans by welcoming the champions on the opening day, after a year and a half with empty stadiums. The support they give us makes the difference, as we saw tonight ”.
Among the absent Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez and Ivan Perisic for the friendly match against Lugano, which will be followed by Wednesday’s matches against Pro Vercelli and Arsenal next Monday.
“We will gradually introduce new players as they arrive,” said Inzaghi. “[Stefan] De Vrij and [Marcelo] Brozovic will be back in the next few days “.
He added: “[The Primavera players] they are doing a great job but I knew they would be up to it because Inter have a fantastic academy. They must continue like this because we will need them at least until August ”.
