Serie-A News: Inter 4-0 Cagliari: Martinez doubled, Nerazzurri at the top of the Serie A standings

Lautaro Martinez scored a brace for Inter who conquered the top of Serie A with a sensational 4-0 over Cagliari at San Siro.

Martinez, who also scored a penalty saved, opened the scoring with a header in the first half and Alexis Sanchez doubled up shortly after the second half.

Hakan Calhanoglu’s 25-yard goal increased the lead, before Martinez put the icing on the cake by taking his Serie A tally for the season to 10 with a nice finish.

Simone Inzaghi’s team took one point ahead of city rivals Milan at the top of the standings after their eighth victory in 10 league matches with the rossoblùs.

No team has scored more set pieces than Inter in this Serie A.

It is therefore no wonder that the hosts scored another goal to open the scoring against the team that had suffered the most in the Italian top flight, with Martinez hitting a header from a corner of Calhanoglu just before half time. Now.

Martinez had a great chance to add a second just before half-time after Denzel Dumfries was knocked down by Alessio Cragno in the box, but the keeper redeemed himself by guessing correctly to avoid the penalty kick.

Inter doubled five minutes from the second half with Sanchez skilfully leading Nicolò Barella’s cross home.

Calhanoglu came into action in the 66th minute when he beat Cragno with a fantastic shot from distance.

Martinez goes into goal again two minutes later; holding on to Barella’s through ball before scoring his sixth league goal against Cagliari in seven appearances.

Sanchez rocked the bar late as reigning champions made an emphatic statement as they climbed to the top.
