Marko Arnautovic claims Manchester United tried several times to sign him in the latest transfer window but says he chose to stay at Bologna despite his family’s desire to return to England.

Former West Ham and Stoke City striker Arnautovic has been linked with a move to United as part of a recruitment campaign for Erik ten Hag’s first season at the club.

The Red Devils were reportedly considering a move for Arnautovic after Cristiano Ronaldo announced his desire to leave Old Trafford, but the 33-year-old insists he is pleased with his decision to stay in Italy.

Manchester United tried several times to sign me and it was a difficult decision to stay in Italy because my family wanted to go back to England,” Arnautovic told Laola1 ahead of Austria’s friendly match against Italy on Sunday.

“It is clear to me that the Red Devils remain at the top of the universe and Bologna do not.

“But it normal. Everything is calm here, there is time for yourself and no stress. It’s only good for me.”

Arnautovic has scored eight goals in 13 Serie A appearances this season, a tally bested only by Napoli’s Victor Osimhen (nine).
