Real Madrid Star Suffers Injury, Faces Lengthy Spell on the Sidelines

On the eve of the start of the new season in the Spanish league 2023-2024, Real Madrid suffered a heavy blow: its star and Belgian goalkeeper Thibault Courtois tore his cruciate ligament in training on Thursday.

Real Madrid said in a statement posted on its website: “Following tests carried out on our player Thibault Courtois, he was diagnosed with a torn ACL in his left knee.”

He added: “The player will have surgery in the coming days.”

The club did not specify how long Courtois would be out, but Spanish reports indicated that he would miss most of the season, if not the end of it.

The injury is considered a painful blow for Real Madrid, given that the Belgian goalkeeper has been the most prominent player in the royal team in recent years.

Courtois joined Real Madrid from Chelsea after the 2018 World Cup and helped the club win the Spanish League title twice and last year’s Champions League title.

And the Ukrainian Andrei Lunin will lead the gates of Real Madrid instead of Courtois, and Real Madrid should start their campaign in La Liga the day after tomorrow, on Saturday, against Athletic Bilbao.
