Real Madrid Contemplates Alvarez as a Potential Backup Choice

Real Madrid are expected to sign Kylian Mbappe when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires next summer, but according to Spanish publication Fichajes they are considering other options, namely Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez in case if Mbappe’s transfer does not take place. That will not happen.

City signed Alvarez in January 2022 from River Plate for around £20 million and sent him back on loan for the season. This means he effectively arrived at the club in the same transfer window as Erling Haaland and has largely been overshadowed by the Norwegian sensation, although manager Pep Guardiola has used both of his strikers together in recent matches. In all competitions, Alvarez scored 19 goals and provided five assists in 55 appearances for City.

The 23-year-old striker played a significant role last year as Argentina lifted their third World Cup trophy in Qatar, playing every game, starting all but the first two group matches and scoring four goals.

Alvarez was heavily linked with Bayern Munich before the Bundesliga champions signed England captain Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.
