Premier League News: Tuchel frustrated by refereeing during Southampton’s win

Thomas Tuchel said he had “zero understanding” of some Premier League referee decisions after Chelsea defeated Southampton 3-1 on Saturday.

The reigning European champions took the lead thanks to Trevoh Chalobah’s second goal at Stamford Bridge with the second shot.

James Ward-Prowse went on to become the fourth player to score and be sent off in the Premier League for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men, who were knocked down by late goals from Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell.

However, it could have been a very different game had Werner’s first-half goal not been ruled out for Cesar Azpilicueta’s apparent foul on Kyle Walker-Peters, and Tuchel vented his frustrations after the game.

“Everyone tells me we’re going back to English football, they won’t whistle soft touches,” Tuchel told Sky Sports of Werner’s disallowed goal.

“We are here in London, it’s raining, it’s an intense game and not even after the situation [that the goal is scored].

“There is a chance and a second chance, there is a shot and a cross and then you score from the second cross – how is this the decisive action for the goal?

“In this situation, I have absolutely no understanding of how you can take the lens away.”

Chelsea have scored the most first-half goals of the top flight this season (seven), although they had to rely on two late goals to seal the three points.

Despite the frustrations surrounding VAR and refereeing, Tuchel was happy for Werner, who shone alongside Romelu Lukaku at the top.

“In the end him [Werner] it was where it was supposed to be, ”Tuchel said during his post-match press conference.

“When you have a Ross ball [Barkley], the cross of Azpi [Azpilicueta], you have to be there as a striker ”.
