Premier League News: Manchester United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur: what was the talk when Eric ten Hag’s team hit the Old Trafford marker?

Manchester United won an impressive 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Wednesday night in a heavyweight clash.

While Erik ten Hag’s men may have known they were up for a major test on home soil, the former Premier League champions set a real milestone as goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandez gave the former Ajax boss all three points.

After handing Spurs just a second top-flight defeat since the opening of the 2022/23 campaign, United have also continued their recent compelling performance at Old Trafford.

However, despite the Manchester trip smelling a chance to be a disappointment and expand their buffer in the top four, Tottenham have struggled to find any real clinical advantage here.

In an enjoyable battle between the two Champions League contenders on Wednesday night, we covered the main topics for discussion.

Dominant show at Old Trafford

Marking his return from September’s international break at the start of the month with an action-packed 6-3 defeat to local rivals and defending champions Manchester City, it was no secret that he was called on by ten Haag to gain some stability of late.

Having come to terms with a 0-0 draw at home against Newcastle last weekend, the Wednesday hosts were looking for a freer play in the final third.

However, despite having nearly overtaken Omonia in Europa League duties over the past two weeks, the former Ajax boss has rightly been full of praise for his team’s excellent performance here.

A much-deserved 2-0 win and hardly shifting from second gear in big games at Old Trafford, United are also now just one point away from a meteoric rise into the top four.

This is arguably their best overall Premier League result since ten Hag arrived in Manchester in the summer. There is no doubt that the former English champions will use Wednesday’s performance as a platform for further development.

Tottenham have to prove it was just a small mistake.

While Antonio Conte may have come under some scrutiny due to Tottenham’s compact play this season, Spurs would have gone to Old Trafford on Wednesday night sensing a chance to get upset.

En route to a 2-0 home win over Everton last weekend, the former Chelsea manager also saw his team lose just one Premier League match since the 2022/23 campaign opened.

However, while Harry Kane may have enjoyed his most successful start to the domestic campaign after already scoring nine goals in the top flight, Tottenham failed to deliver any blow to the hosts on Wednesday here.

Thanks to Hugo Lloris not becoming a major problem, Conte lost each of his four Premier League appearances at Old Trafford in his career.

While Tottenham may still lead the race for another top-four finish this season, north London fans will be desperate for their team to prove that Wednesday’s performance was nothing more than a minor flare.

Bruno is back on top

With Christian Eriksen receiving a lot of accolades since arriving in Manchester over the summer, it’s no secret that Bruno Fernandes has been under increasing pressure on his shoulders in recent months.

Having failed to score in any of United’s previous nine matches in all competitions, the ex-Sporting Lisbon superstar has certainly returned to his best record yet.

After collecting all three points with 20 minutes left when the 28-year-old landed a superb shot, the Portuguese international was at the center of all the positives that Ten Haga’s side achieved mid-week.

In fact, Fernandes created nine chances for United on Wednesday night, more than any player in a Premier League game since September 2021.

By putting on a true man-of-the-match showcase here and headlining what is considered their finest domestic performance under ten Hag, Fernandes also highlighted why he remains vital to Manchester United in the Champions League.
