Premier League News: Liverpool 2-0 Burnley: Jota and Mane lead Klopp’s men to victory in front of the Anfield crowd

Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane scored both sides of the interval to secure Liverpool a 2-0 win over Burnley in front of a full house at Anfield.

The Reds received a boost before Saturday’s clash, Jordan Henderson returned to the Premier League for the first time since February and Andy Robertson was named to the bench after an ankle injury.

It was Robertson’s replacement Konstantinos Tsimikas who created the lead, finding Jota with a cross as the striker scored his second goal in as many games at the start of the new season.

Both teams had been canceled for offside, Mohamed Salah and Ashley Barnes the unlucky couple, before Sadio Mane took advantage of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s curling move to seal the win.

Burnley had a better start, offering the hosts a rude awakening with Alexander-Arnold forced to a block on the goal line to block Dwight McNeil’s low shot – the flag of offside that appeared belatedly after the initial scare.

The hosts then opened the scoring on 18 minutes when Jota overtook Nick Pope to score his first league goal at Anfield since November 2020.

Salah managed to overtake the Burnley goalkeeper to seemingly add a second, only for the VAR which established Egypt’s forward offside after a clever discharge from Harvey Elliott, making his first Premier League start for Liverpool.

James Tarkowski nearly equalized on the stroke of half-time, overtaking Alisson but going just wide when the keeper failed to catch Matthew Lowton’s deep set piece.

Burnley canceled a goal of his own after half-time, with Barnes crashing into the roof of the net before seeing the assistant raise the flag correctly.

Any concern among the returning home crowd about the slim advantage was extinguished when Mane hinted at Liverpool’s dominance in the second half, breaking a low attempt on the net to cap the hosts’ superb building game.

Alisson secured the clean sheet with a courageous deep recovery save, rushing to deny Barnes from close range after the striker was thrown by replacement Jay Rodriguez.
